I would love nothing more than a house that smelled like nothing. The kind of absence of smell that makes you think your house is clean. However in a house with two big dogs, that just doesn’t happen. So I resort to this easy solution for deodorizing.
DIY Room Spray
- 1 part water
- 1 part alcohol( I use a cheap high proof vodka)
- Approximately 1 Tbsp of baking soda per 2/3 cups of water ( you want it to dissolve)
- Essential Lavender oil (for a small spray bottle I use 40 drops)
If you have a more refined olfactory pallet, you can mix scents with lemon, bergamote, rose, or geranium. I have even mixed with citronella, but that is really a more acquired smell.

This week will be the ode to lavender…
I know I throw around the word obsessed a lot when talking about plants, but when it comes to lavender this is not an overstatement. I have three types of lavender, just in my front yard. Heck, I would go all out lavender field in my back yard if I had the resources. I use home made lavender room spray and lavender body lotions, it quite honestly, is the only scent I don’t tire of eventually.
So, we begin this week by looking at lavender broadly, as a color in art.

I remember entering gladiolus in the county fair when I was kid, and while I can’t remember if I won or not, I still have a soft spot for this bulb. While pink wouldn’t be my first choice ( I prefer the red), these were an inheritance from my home’s previous owner. Since I’m a sucker for the idea that our actions echo over time, I can’t seem to part with them, although I did transplant them last year so I could have a better placement in my garden.
